51Թ Seeks Community Input to Help Shape 2026–2031 Strategic Plan

UNC Pembroke has officially launched the development of its 2026–2031 Strategic Plan, a collaborative effort to shape the university’s vision for the next five years.
As the university continues to build on its growing momentum, the emerging plan is focused on strengthening 51Թ’s mission, expanding opportunity and ensuring the institution remains responsive to the evolving needs of students, the region and the state. In step with the priorities of the UNC System and the State of North Carolina, the plan will highlight 51Թ’s ongoing commitment to service, access and economic vitality across southeastern North Carolina and beyond.
“As we look ahead, our work is grounded in the same values that have always defined UNC Pembroke: access, service and the power of education to change lives,” said Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings, MD. “Together, we’ll build a plan that reflects who we are today and the future we’re creating for the next generation of Braves.”
Work on the 2026–2031 Strategic Plan began last spring, engaging voices from across campus through focus groups, a university-wide town hall and engagement with the Student Government Association and the Faculty and Staff Senates. A Strategic Plan Steering Committee, composed of representatives from across the university, was also established to guide this collaborative effort and ensure broad participation.
The planning process emphasizes engagement and transparency, inviting faculty, staff, students, alumni and the larger community to share ideas, perspectives and feedback. Participants can contribute by completing the to help identify priorities and opportunities for the years ahead. The survey will be open for submissions through November 10.
“This is more than a campus plan. It represents a shared vision for how UNC Pembroke will continue to strengthen North Carolina through education, innovation and service,” said Dr. Jess Boersma, chief of staff and vice chancellor for strategic initiatives. “The insights gathered from our stakeholders will help shape the goals and actions that define the next phase of 51Թ’s growth and success.”
Feedback collected this semester will guide the next stages of the process. The final plan is expected to be presented to the UNC Pembroke Board of Trustees for approval in spring 2026, followed by implementation across the university.
